About Herkimer Diamonds

Herkimer diamonds will give you and yours a lifetime of enjoyment! Crystals found in the Earth require a coincidence of appropriate conditions which as a result is responsible for the growth of our Herkimer diamonds.

The environment must provide a crucible of some sort for the crystals to form in. The correct elements for the crystal’s formation must be present and, in a state, known as free dissociation.  Like common table salt dissolved in water the constituent elements must be moving freely within a confined area and as a result provide the perfect conditions for these elements to come together in a regular geometric pattern.

The pattern for this geometric design is created by the electrostatic forces at the atomic level.  Atoms in this state act like little magnets and like the north and south poles in magnets they can only attach to each other in ways that are specifically dictated by these forces. It is these forces that ultimately shape the beautiful geometry of Herkimer diamonds.

The host rock for Herkimer diamonds is the Cambrian-age, Little Falls Dolostone.  About 500 million years ago Herkimer diamonds formed in cavities within the Little Falls Dolostone. These cavities contain hydrocarbon which as result form, drusy quartz crystals.
